"Trout Fishing Capital of Colorado"
Fairplay was founded in 1867 and it's elevation is 9,957 feet. There are 678 people within the city limits and about 1,500 more in outlying areas. Fairplay is the Park County Seat and the center of our government. Included in the town is a school, library, post office, motels and hotels, grocery store, many restaurants, several gas stations, a bank, numerous small businesses, and a beautiful Recreation Center with a skate board park. Fairplay's major event is our Burro Days (the Burro Race). The area is gorgeous and only about 25 minutes from Breckenridge!
The multiple forks of the South Platte River, along with the many streams and creeks, make South Park the "Trout Fishing Capital of Colorado"!! South Park also has several very popular lakes including Spinney Reservoir, Eleven-Mile Reservoir, Tarryall Reservoir, Jefferson Lake, and Antero Reservoir. The "Fairplay Beach" (pictured above) is a popular part of the Middle Fork of the South Platte River for adults and youngsters alike to fly fish. You're almost guaranteed to catch at least one in our many rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes!
National Forest, State Land, and BLM Land is within minutes of everywhere! Our area is surrounded by the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, both providing plenty of camping, hiking, ATVing, equstrian, and hunting opportunities. There are plenty of USFS camping locations around and several full-hookup RV Campgrounds also. Nearby Hiking Trails seem endless starting with part of the Colorado Trail on Kenosha Pass to multiple 14'ers for more advanced adventurous hikers. Of course, with plenty of designated Forest Service trails, there are many paths for those wanting to 4-wheel, snowmobile, or to ride their horses to partake in the breath-taking mountain beauty. As far as hunting or wildlife-viewing goes, Fairplay is well known for being the home of the largest Elk Herd population in the US (if not the World)! But there is much more than just Elk that call South Park home. We love our eagle, bears, deer, mountain lions, antelope, bobcats, moose, and lynx also!
Fairplay's Main Street (above left) is also known as State Highway 9 and is the main road to all of what Summit County has to offer! There are many businesses on Main Street including Park County Government Offices, Fairplay Municipal Offices, schools, The Fairplay Valiton Hotel, and The Brown Burro restaurant. Front Street (above right) runs parallel to Main Street and also has many businesses including McCall's Park Bar, The Creamery, The Hand Hotel, Millonzi's Restaurant, and leads directly to South Park City (a restored 1880's mining town)! The road overlooks the Middle Fork of the South Platte River and Fairplay Beach! Our great Town is very close to Alma, Como, Jefferson, Hartsel, Guffey, Buena Vista and Salida!
The beautiful Upper Arkansas River is about 30 minutes away and is well known for it's diverse sporting activities! Vast numbers of fishermen congregate around it's plentiful waters for both Brown and Rainbow Trout. Not to be outdone by the fishermen, the Arkansas provides easy to extreme whitewater for rafters and kayakers alike. Several canyons provide whitewater challenges for the novice all the way up to the experienced extremers. There are even family float trips allowing everyone to experience the gorgeous Rocky Mountain scenery!
Colorado's capital, Denver, as well as Colorado Springs are only about an hour and a half away. Both cities have everything anyone could want. Plenty of shopping centers, restaurants, and both have major airports. To and from both cities are numerous great towns along the way including Bailey, Pine Junction, and Conifer along Highway 285 and Lake George, Florrisant, Divide, and Woodland Park along Highway 24.
